How should I store PU timing belts, and what is their shelf life?

Direct answer: Keep belts coiled loosely in their original packaging, in a cool, dry, dark room, typically about 10 to 30 degrees C and moderate humidity. Under these conditions PU timing belts normally keep for several years in storage, and two to three years is a commonly quoted figure, before installation rather than calendar time becomes the main concern.

Storage conditions that actually matter
| Factor | Recommendation | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature | Roughly 10 to 30 degrees C, avoid heat sources | Heat accelerates hydrolysis and hardens the polyurethane |
| Humidity | Dry storage, avoid condensation and hot damp air | Moisture plus heat drives hydrolysis in standard PU |
| Light | Keep in packaging, away from sunlight | UV degrades the surface and discolours the belt |
| Ozone and chemicals | Away from motors with arcing brushes, solvents, fuels | Ozone and solvents attack the belt surface |
| Loading | Nothing stacked on the coils, no hanging on hooks | Point loads and sharp bends set permanent tooth marks |
Handling before installation
- Never bend a belt tighter than the minimum pulley diameter for its pitch, even by hand.
- Keep coils in their natural shape; do not force a wide belt into a small box.
- Use first in, first out so the oldest stock is fitted first.
- Leave belts in packaging until the moment of fitting, especially in a dirty workshop.

Checks after long storage
Look
Surface should be smooth, not crazed, sticky or discoloured. Fine cracks mean the belt has aged and should not be fitted.
Feel
The belt should stay flexible. A hard or brittle feel points to heat or hydrolysis damage during storage.
Fit and run in
After fitting, re-check tension after the first day of running, as any belt settles slightly in its first hours.
