Why is my PU timing belt wearing unevenly or starting to delaminate?

Direct answer: Wear patterns are diagnostic. One worn edge points to misalignment; tooth-tip wear on every tooth points to over-tension or a worn pulley; cord lines showing through point to small pulleys or cord fatigue; and separation near the joint on a welded belt points to weld quality or excessive back bending.

Read the wear pattern
| Wear pattern | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| One edge worn or frayed | Pulley or idler misalignment, shaft not parallel | Align a straight edge across all pulley faces |
| Tooth tips flattened across the belt | Over-tension or worn pulley teeth | Tension setting, pulley tooth profile with a gauge |
| Cord lines visible through the teeth | Pulleys below minimum diameter, cord fatigue | Smallest pulley diameter against the pitch minimum |
| Chunks missing from tooth roots | Debris in the drive, shock loads, under-tension | Guard sealing, load cycles, tension re-check |
| Separation along a welded joint | Weld zone limits, back bending over a small idler | Joint position versus idler, weld specification |

What fixes each case
- Laser-align or straight-edge-align all pulleys and idlers, then re-check after the first week of running.
- Set tension to the manufacturer value for the belt section and re-check after 24 to 48 hours.
- Replace pulleys whose teeth show hooked or rounded flanks; a new belt on worn pulleys wears fast.
- Keep the smallest pulley at or above the minimum diameter for the pitch and cord type.
- Where wear concentrates at a welded joint on a long belt, ask about a seamless or moulded alternative for that length.
When the environment is part of the cause
Abrasive dust, oil mist and heat all accelerate the same mechanical faults. If the drive is clean and aligned and wear still comes fast, send photos of the belt, the pulleys and the machine environment. Sometimes the right answer is a different cover or compound rather than a harder belt.

Send us the wear pattern
Email photos of the worn belt, the pulley teeth and your tension setting to sales@goodlybelts.com. We will tell you whether the belt, the drive or the specification is the cause.
